Ian William Doughty
June 1944 - December 2001
Ian and I met in 1969 at the Granary Jazz Club as it was then and
quickly realised we had attended the same grammar school in Swindon,
the slight gap in age precluding us meeting then! Ian had been
reading Mechanical Engineering at Bristol University and was in the
merchant navy when we met. I was training as a nurse at Southmead
hospital. Our 30 years of marriage produced two boys, of whom we are
very proud, and many happy memories of wonderful holidays in France,
Switzerland and Canada.
Ian's hobbies around trains, planes and ships, mostly modelling, but
also visiting air shows, model exhibitions and book shops impacted
greatly on the boys own interests. In the latter years he was working
on a book about Swindon Station but he failed to finish this project,
happily I found another 'nut' who took the information and intends to
continue.
Ian had two episodes of ODG, the first in 1991 heralded by a massive
fit. Following two lots of surgery by Mr Sandeman he made a good
recovery getting back to work and eventually driving. After 9 years
we were beginning to feel a cure when his health deteriorated again,
more surgery and radiotherapy were followed by a long year of slow
decline resulting in Ian's death on New Year's Eve 2001.
Tina and I supported each other in hospital and I was interested in
her charity, however it was not set up in time for Ian's funeral - we
supported the Ray Of Hope appeal instead as the Oncology Centre was
full of wonderful support too. I wish Hammer Out every success in the
future. Everyone remembers Ian as a kind and gentle man - we talk of
him often with great love.
